Sequences of Willmore surfaces
In this paper we develop the theory of Willmore sequences for Willmore
surfaces in the 4-sphere. We show that under appropriate conditions this
sequence has to terminate. In this case the Willmore surface either is the
twistor projection of a holomorphic curve into complex projective space or the
inversion of a minimal surface with planar ends in 4-space. These results give
a unified explanation of previous work on the characterization of Willmore
spheres and Willmore tori with non-trivial normal bundles by various authors.Comment: 10 page
Topological Field Theory and Rational Curves
We analyze the superstring propagating on a Calabi-Yau threefold. This theory
naturally leads to the consideration of Witten's topological non-linear
sigma-model and the structure of rational curves on the Calabi-Yau manifold. We
study in detail the case of the world-sheet of the string being mapped to a
multiple cover of an isolated rational curve and we show that a natural
compactification of the moduli space of such a multiple cover leads to a
formula in agreement with a conjecture by Candelas, de la Ossa, Green and
Parkes.Comment: 20 page
Harmonic maps from degenerating Riemann surfaces
We study harmonic maps from degenerating Riemann surfaces with uniformly
bounded energy and show the so-called generalized energy identity. We find
conditions that are both necessary and sufficient for the compactness in
and modulo bubbles of sequences of such maps.Comment: 27 page
New constructions of twistor lifts for harmonic maps
We show that given a harmonic map from a Riemann surface to a
classical compact simply connected inner symmetric space, there is a
-holomorphic twistor lift of (or its negative) if and only if it
is nilconformal. In the case of harmonic maps of finite uniton number, we give
algebraic formulae in terms of holomorphic data which describes their extended
solutions. In particular, this gives explicit formulae for the twistor lifts of
all harmonic maps of finite uniton number from a surface to the above symmetric
spaces.Comment: Some minor changes and a correction of Example 8.
